‘Open Banking’ may not be the best phrase to describe the growing industry of technologists and finance pioneers working to create choice within a banking industry that’s ripe for change, says Nick Ogden, founder of ClearBank and RTGS.global. He also says, while adoption by the business sector is growing, awareness among consumers is low, and the brand label may not help that. Consumers still predominantly use the major high-street banks and building societies (CMA9) for their main banking needs, and the most likely catalyst for change would be a challenger bank that truly breaks the mould and instead of replicating what traditional banks offer, provides its customers with something innovative.

In this insightful interview Nick also shares the story of how ClearBank, the first new clearing bank in the UK in 250 years, was created and how it serves the industry. And Nick also spoke about another passion of his: real-time payments. As the founder and chief executive officer of RTGS.global (https://rtgs.global/), a cross-border liquidity network, he has a front row seat to the development of faster payments initiatives, and his conclusion is while some systems, such as the one in Australia, are very sophisticated, more needs to be done when it comes to global connectivity of these systems.
